Cold Connections For Stone Setting
Introductory Level Class, Basic Sawing and metal skill are suggested.
9:30 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday, August 1st thru Friday, August 5th, 2011
This workshop will focus on the use of cold connections (rivets & tabs) as design choices for setting stones and found objects in jewelry objects. Participants will learn to make and intergrate tabs, 4 styles of rivets, pierced and bent finger prongs asa well as staples will be explored. Fragile found-object and alternative materials can be intergrated into jewelry design utilizing these flame-free methods. Faceted glass "gemstones," copper, aluminum, sheet, wire, and tube are provided in the kit, as well as setting burs. No Silver will be provided. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own materials.

Custom Settings for Faceted Stones
Intermediate Level, Skill based workshop
9:30 AM - 5:00 PM daily Saturday, August 6th thru Monday, August 8th, 2011
In this Intermediate skill level workshop, participants will learn to make and set "heads" for oval and cushion cut faceted stones. Large faceted glass "gemstones" in oval and cushion cuts are supplied in the kit along with setting burs and copper in sheet and wire form. We will explore the use of wire and sheet to build mountings for non-traditionally cut, faceted stones. Tools that I will demonstrate will be dividers, brass slide gauges, flex shafts with setting burs.

Jewelry Rendering
Beginning Level Class, Drawing Jewelry for custom design and fabrication.
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Friday, July 22
In this one-day intensive students will learn to draw symmetrical patterns for piercing and fabrication patterns, to draw three-quarter views for customer viewing, and architectural lay-out of jewelry designs for master fabrication. Use of templates, mirror imaging, and multiple detail capture with a light table, students will gain valuable techniques and skills for “rendering” (drawing in 2D) their jewelry concepts. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own sets of colored pencils and any templates they are currently using.

Nanz Aalund spent over 20 years as a bench jeweler and jewelry designer illustrating and working with repairs and custom manufacture in silver, gold, and platinum for the Jewelry Industry and for Nordstrom.

The Gold Standard
Basic jewelry repair, ring sizing, gold identification and use tips
Intermediate Level Class.
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, July 23rd and Sunday, July 24th
For this two-day workshop Student’s own broken jewelry will be used to teach the how-to repair techniques of jewelry repair. Bring your broken earrings, necklaces, and rings to learn how they can be fixed. In silver and gold! Yes - due to popular demand gold identification and use in jewelry making will be covered too. Solders, torch tips, fluxes, karats, and hallmarks that are used with gold will be taught. Strategies for pricing and identifying what jewelry damage can be repaired (and what should not) will be covered.
